The Rockaway Peninsula, popularly called The Rockaways or Rockaway, is located at the southernmost point of Queens, New York City. Manhattan mostly isolates it along with other metropolitan areas of the metropolitan area. Rockaway has been a popular holiday area since the 1830s. It’s now a fusion of middle, lower, and upper regions. The area has been among the city’s fastest-growing parts of gentrification in the last decade.
The peninsula can be divided into nine neighborhoods or sections. From east to west, they’re:
- Far Rockaway, from the Nassau County line to Beach 32nd Street, Queens;
- Bayswater is situated north in Far Rockaway, along the southern shores of Jamaica Bay
- Edgemere The Edgemere Beach 32nd Street to Beach 56th Street;
- Arverne in the area of Beach 56th Street to Beach 79th Street;
- Rockaway Beach, from 79th Street to Beach 108th Street; Rockaway Park From Beach 108th Street to Beach 126th Street;
- Belle Harbor, from Beach 126th Street to Beach 141st Street;
- Neponsit, Beach 141st Street to Beach 149th Street;
- Breezy Point, from Beach 149th through the western edge.
“Rockaway.” The word “Rockaway” may have meant “place of sands” in the Munsee language, spoken by Native American Lenape people who resided in the region before European contact in the early 17th century. Various spellings, such as Requarkie, Rechouwakie, Rechaweygh, Rechquaakie, and Reckowacky, were transliterated to Dutch or English by the colonists who first arrived. The indigenous residents of the Rockaways are known as the Canarsie Indians, which were part of the Lenape with a name connected to geography. The town was given the name Reckowacky. Reckowacky can be used to distinguish Rockaway town from Mohegan’s various cities. “Reckowacky” means “lonely place” or “place of bright waters.” Superb Junk Removal
In September 1609, Henry Hudson and his crew were the first Europeans to be recognized as having been seen in the Rockaways and the Jamaica Bay area. Hudson had been trying to find his route toward his destination, the Northwest Passage. On September 11, Hudson sailed into Upper New York Bay, and the following day, he set off on his journey on the Hudson River in honor of him.
In the aftermath of a partition lawsuit filed, Cornell was divided into 46 lots due to an action for partition. Cornell’s land was split into 46 parcels by the year 1808. A handful of wealthy New Yorkers established the Rockaway Association, which brought some parcels and started developing resorts in the area in 1833. Rockaway was a sought-after hotel location with sea views beginning in the 1830s. It was the very first resort opened at Far Rockaway in 1835.
Parks and Recreations
A significant part of Rockaway Peninsula in Queens, NYC, is in the Gateway National Recreation Area. It houses the National Park Service and operates three sites within the area. Jacob Riis Park is near the western end of the peninsula. It covers approximately 262 acres (106 ha) west of Beach 149th Street in Neponsit. Fort Tilden is a group of military structures dating back to the war, situated west of Jacob Riis Park. The last part, Breezy Point Tip, is a 200-acre (or 0.81 km2) acres (0.81 km2))) beach which is also a breeding area.
