Ridgewood is an area inside Queens, New York City. It lies between areas such as Maspeth, Middle Village, Glendale, Glendale, and the Brooklyn communities of Bushwick, as well as East Williamsburg. The area has been historically located along the Queens-Brooklyn border.
The exact origins of the word Ridgewood are not clear. However, it could refer to Ridgewood Reservoir, the local geography, or even a roadway. The British began to settle in Ridgewood in the 17th century. In the meantime, the Dutch were moving closer to Bushwick. The adjacent settlements to Bushwick caused years of contention over the boundaries, which later became the boundary between Queens, Brooklyn, and Queens. Brooklyn. Bushwick was quickly developed in its 19th-century development. But, Ridgewood was not heavily populous until the second half of the 20th century as rowhouses were constructed to accommodate the rapidly expanding German population. Ridgewood has become more multicultural and diverse since the mid-20th century and onwards. Most of the area is classified as a national historical city area.
The reasoning behind Ridgewood’s name isn’t clear. One hypothesis is that it was taken directly from Ridgewood Reservoir, in Highland Park, in Brooklyn, near Ridgewood. The reservoir was on an incline within the Harbor Hill Moraine, a terminal moraine across Long Island. Another possible etymological link is the forest that surrounded the area before colonization. The first English colonists recognized this moraine as the ridge from Long Island. A different likely etymological parent could have been “Ridge Road.” Superb Junk Removal
Ridgewood is adjacent to Bushwick, Brooklyn, and both neighborhoods have the same history. Both were first established through Lenape Native Americans, specifically the Mespachtes tribe (for which the region of Maspeth has been named). In 1638, the Dutch West India Company was given an agreement with the Lenape. Then, Peter Stuyvesant chartered present-day Bushwick in 1661 under Boswijck, which translates to “neighborhood in the woods” in 17th-century Dutch. Like that, Ridgewood formed part of Newtown in the three towns founded by Queens, NYC in 1661 by the British.
